Be it Heart or Habit

– Secret Place Insights –

Dear One, recently, although it was very early, Ron and I got up at the same time. So that morning I did not have to whisper-sing to God of His holiness. You see, the quiet-time room / computer room sits directly under our bedroom, but that morning I could sing with no concern about waking him up. Well, I still had some concern about being heard for I have little, if any, musical skills.

So that part was pleasant, but as I sang, I realized that my heart was not in it, not settled on God. I was simply voicing the words. So I stopped and thought about my lack of feeling, and wondered if I should continue? Could God be honored with such an attitude?

Then I thought about all the good things you and I do all throughout the day, things which we do not necessarily carry out with grateful hearts. Regardless of that, we fulfill our duties. And that benefits everyone… family, friends, co-workers, employers, and others. With that thinking, I returned to praising God again, yes, out of habit.

You can probably guess what happened? It wasn’t long before the time with God became sweet, not syrupy sweet, deeply sweet, rich and precious. So much so, that when it seemed that He was dismissing me for my day’s task, I did not want to leave. I responded, “Oh Lord, must I leave you now?” The sense was…that I should. Of course, I should not have been surprised. He knew that my day’s schedule was weighty. So apparently, He felt that I had better get a move on.

At that point, I had only read the first of the four sections of the Bible (the post Simultaneous Reading explains that), but it was clear, I was to leave, and get busy with what appeared to be an extra challenging day.

Amazing isn’t it? Even if we don’t feel connected with God, if we still purpose to honor Him, out of His love, He blesses us. Before being dismissed from that time with God, I had pulled from the shelf Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler and meditatively prayed through the list of His names. It was a delight, I hope that it might be a delight for you as well.

Knowing God

Many believers are unaware of the intimate relationship God desires to have with us. Often sermons, and conversations, refer to such a relationship, with little, if any, instructions on how to draw into life-changing fellowship with God. Thus, few listeners are guided through helpful steps for developing one. This website is dedicated to the purpose of knowing God and making Him known.
