At church, I was told that one of our members had a serious eye problem. He had already lost the vision of one eye, and now he had lost the top half of his vision in the other, with little hope for recovery. And, he was threatened with the loss of his remaining vision. When I heard I prayed for him, and we prayed for him again during corporate prayer.
It wasn’t until the next morning, during my quiet-time, when I was randomly praying for my needs, and the needs of others, that I prayed for the man again. When I did, I noticed an incredible difference in the intensity from that of my prayers of the day before. I wondered about that. Hadn’t I sincerely prayed for the man yesterday? Yes, I had. So what was up, why was this particular prayer so different this morning?
While thinking of him, I had closed one eye and covered the other halfway, and looked around to discover what I could see. I could not see much. I imagined what life would be like with only 25% vision, and then I thought about what his life might be without any vision. I remembered his enthusiasm for up-north fishing. Oh, if he can no longer go fishing with his buddies, how awful that will be. In sympathy for him, my heart sank. I passionately prayed over and over again, please allow him to keep the vision that he has. My compassion was triple fold what it had been the day before.
What made the difference? Surely it was the work of God.
Surely it was. I had given God lengthy time that morning, and in that time He had grown my heart more to His liking…more to the likeness of Christ. Albeit you, and I, will never be able to reach the fullness of Christ, but in reverent solitude a measure of His compassion becomes ours, and we, and others, are richly blessed through the effort. This is how God desires us to pray for one another…through His sympathy, His empathy.

fulfill the law of Christ” Galatians 6:2
